Queer Youth Leadership Day
April 21, 2017

Last month, four EMS Queer Straight Alliance students attended the Queer Youth Leadership Day at the State House, organized by Outright VT. At this all-day event, students learned more about what advocacy means, and got to give testimonies in committee meetings about gender neutral bathrooms, queer youth mental health and the importance of safe spaces in schools. These students got to be on the ground with the legislators who will be making these decisions and they had their voices heard!

Our students also had the opportunity to meet with and ask questions of a panel of "Out" legislators about what their experience has been being queer in the State House and in politics. This day also marked the 16th anniversary of the passage of the civil union legislation that first took place in Vermont. Our students got to meet with other queer youth from across the state and learned more about their rights as students and their influence as citizens of Vermont, and for some, it was their first taste of what grassroots activism and politics are all about in our brave little state!

Afterschool youth ambassadors from Hunt and Edmunds Middle Schools joined other students from across Vermont in Montpelier as part of the annual Vermont Afterschool and Summer Learning Day on February 16.

This year’s Afterschool and Summer Learning Day focused on the Zap the Gap campaign, a statewide advocacy effort to create a dedicated public funding source for afterschool and summer learning programs. Students had the opportunity to meet legislatures, and testify for the Senate Education Committee on why afterschool matters to them.

Afterschool UVM Birding Program at Flynn
March 9, 2017

Senior Site Director Mandi Harris started the Birding Program last year, in collaboration with UVM, which has now spread to the Hunt Middle School Afterschool Program as well. What is missing from the articles below is the extreme enthusiasm from the Flynn students for the program. They are waiting at the door every Wednesday for their mentors to arrive—it is a great sight to see!

Above the Influence Burlington (ATI BTV) Students Rally in Montpelier
March 3, 2017,

On February 3rd, ATI BTV members Noah J. Smith and Elizabeth “Libby” Branch marched to the State House to voice their opposition to flavored tobacco and e-cigarette products and to educate legislators about the dangers these products pose to youth. The rally was organized by Counter Balance Vermont, a campaign to end the influence of flavored tobacco on Vermont’s youth, and the Vermont Department of Health. Noah was selected to serve as a media representative for the rally. He addressed the rally crowd on the State House stairs and shared rally messages with multiple local media outlets. Noah and Libby gave testimony to the Senate Committee on Health and Welfare. Committee members invited them back to provide additional testimony when Counter Balance survey results are published.
